Arizona’s water supply

With the influx of new residents to Arizona, there have been a lot of discussions about our water supply.  Especially since the declaration of the first-ever water shortage from the Colorado River caused us to reduce our take from the Colorado River by 18% this year.  Regardless of this cut, Arizona leads in the management of groundwater and has a multi-faceted portfolio of water supplies throughout.  Here are some highlights of our water supply from AZ Big Media.

• Arizona has five times (5x) more water stored than we use and has never mandated municipal or residential use restrictions throughout our state’s history.

• Only 36% of the Arizona water supply is provided by the Colorado River; Nevada is 100% reliant; its California’s predominant water supply at 60% and makes up 30-40% of Colorado’s.

• Arizona is a national leader when it comes to the reuse of water. California sends more water back to the Pacific Ocean each year than the City of Phoenix uses in total.
